Welcome to the nineteenth day of our 30/30!
I’m pretty sure that just showing up today counts as winning National Poetry Month. I think that’s a reasonable assumption, don’t you? You devoted writer, you.
Your prompt today is:
The night’s quietest sound
Guidelines, if you want them:
- Posting your response is not required
- Feel free to post your response  🙂
- This is not meant to be the perfect first draft – respond without hesitation for 5-7 minutes, then keep going if you want to
- While our prompts are geared towards poetry, we welcome all kinds of artists
- Tips & encouragement are here
Already There
The night’s quietest sound is the frog’s
first tentative trill: peepers in the heavy
mat of last year’s marsh, the tree frogs
high up in the canopy, the bull frog trying
to find voice after winter’s hibernation.
When winds blow just warm enough to
burst the Dutchman’s Britches into bloom
with the Jack-in-the-Pulpits and the deep
maroon trilliums, begin your task of
listening to what is already there.
In absolute stillness, walk the ditches
to the low water. See where the
dampness runs to a trickle, follow the
track to the pond. Find where the
irrigation trail cuts the pasture and
then hold your breath. Hunker down
so that your body stops its motion.
Listen with your most primitive being,
There’s melodies on the wind for the
snagging: to hear them, be the frog.
