  1. In spring wind whips the shed door
    open and shut, whistles and rumbles,
    batters daffodil blooms newly unfurled.
    A cypress snaps, trunk crashes
    across the driveway, a neighbor’s fence,
    blasts my wild hope that in the end
    clouds of carbon, sand gusts, swaths
    of earth stripped bare – even rising
    seas – can be halted, our greed quieted,
    our politicians’ mad fiddling stilled.

  2. Pelt, pummel, rattle, and shake –
    March winds more than rustle
    softly in the trees.
    Trees bend low,
    humbling themselves before the force
    that shakes them from winter’s slumber.
    No hesitation is tolerated;
    clean out the deadwood;
    dig your feet down, get moving,
    life can’t wait for you to quietly dust the cobwebs.
    Sap is running and your heart beats fresh.
    Gray is out, green is in.
    The winds of spring are breathing out our lungs.
